(NYSE: KO), which has been battling declining sales of carbonated beverages, is not finding many friends on Wall Street after reporting its second quarter results.

As expected, they were weak. Net income fell 23% to $1.42 billion, or 61 cents per share, compared with $1.85 billion, or 80 cents, a year earlier, the Atlanta-based company said in its earnings press release. Excluding a non-cash impairment charge resulting from the write down of North American assets of Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc.
(NYSE:CCE), profit would have been $1.01. Revenue rose 17% to $9.05 billion.

The results beat the 96-cent profit and $8.83 billion revenue of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News and yet the stock is trading down because of concerns about the North American business of the world's largest beverage company. Though net revenue in the business is up about 10% so far this year, unit case volume is flat. Results in other parts of the world were much better.

"Our results were once again led by our international operations, which delivered 5 percent unit case volume growth, and we maintained volume in North America despite significant challenges," said Chief Executive Muhtar Kent in the earnings release.

Wall Street is clearly not impressed. Shares of Coca-Cola had their biggest slump today in almost four years. Coca-Cola is doing what it can to reduce costs, targeting $400 million to $500 million in annualized savings from productivity initiatives. Whether it will be enough to appease stockholders, such as Warren Buffett, remains to be seen.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Pepsi Bottling Group's shares hit by Wall Street after earnings report

Filed under: Earnings reports, Coca-Cola (KO), PepsiCo (PEP), Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE)

Pepsi Bottling Group (NYSE: PBG) issued its Q2 earnings numbers today, and the market apparently wasn't impressed. As of 2:45, the shares are off well over 4%.

The numbers weren't bad in some respects, but a couple areas weren't encouraging. Sales increased about 5%, and earnings per diluted share expanded by 12% to $0.78. That was more than enough to beat the analysts, who were looking for about $0.75 per share, according to Briefing.com. However, worldwide case volume declined 3%. Case volume is one of the most important metrics for a beverage company, so this is very disheartening. Also, cash from operations dropped to $89 million for the six-month period from a year-ago level of $158 million. There was no free cash flow, but management does expect positive free cash flow for the fiscal year.

Considering the bottler's forward guidance and dividend yield, the shares are somewhat cheap. But they are basically at a 52-week low in a bad market, so I wouldn't bother with them. When it comes to investing in the beverage sector, I prefer owning a PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) or a Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO). In fact, I own the latter. Avoiding bottlers like Pepsi Bottling Group and Coca-Cola Enterprises (NYSE: CCE) makes sense for the long-term since the bottlers will always have greater exposure to capital-expenditure requirements.

Disclosure: I own Coke; positions can change at any time.

Read | Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Can new bottle sizes restore fizz to soda sales?

Filed under: Coca-Cola (KO), PepsiCo (PEP), Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE)
So here's the deal: soda sales have been on the decline as consumers flock to better-tasting, ostensibly healthier, more "natural" beverages like Vitamin Water, which is owned by Coca Cola (NYSE: KO).

According to Beverage Digest, U.S. soda sales in major retail channels overall declined 3.5% in the first quarter, and convenience-store sales dropped fell 4.2%.

How does the soft drink industry plan to combat the trend? According to the Wall Street Journal(subscription required) , "To win back sales, several Coca-Cola and Pepsi bottlers are conducting pilot tests on a variety of bottle sizes they hope will appeal to consumers put off by the 20-ounce bottle or looking for a cheaper option to cushion the blow of high food and energy prices."

I'll be shocked -- shocked -- if this does anything to boost soda sales. Soda sales are declining for a very good reason: soda is bad for you and people now have great-tasting alternatives. At the risk of being alarmist, I think that soda sales -- at least in the United States -- are in a permanent state of decline. I think Coke knows that: they saw the future and bought Vitamin Water.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Analyst initiations: Glu Mobile, USA Technologies, Fulton Financial

Filed under: MasterCard Inc'A' (MA), Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE), Analyst initiations
MOST NOTEWORTHY: Glu Mobile, USA Technologies and Fulton Financial were today's noteworthy initiations:
The wisdom:

In tough times, think established companies. Something, as my Uncle Nick would say, "As strong as the New York Giants' defensive front four." And I added that in case one hadn't noticed lately, the defensive front four of the Giants, also the favorite football team of yours truly, is still pretty good.

(My late Uncle Nick, of course, based his advise on the Giants' longstanding tradition of building a strong defense first, because, according to many revered football head coaches, Vince Lombardi and Bill Parcells among them, defense wins championships.)

Defense wins in Super Bowls

Well, as most are aware, the Giants defeated the New England Patriots, 17-14, in Super Bowl XLII, in one of the biggest upsets in pro football history, if not sports history. Going into the game the Patriots were undefeated at 18-0 and were 12-point favorites - - a tough environment for the Giants, to say the least.

And yet, the Giants won. They held the high-powered, menacing Patriot offense to just 14 points. How did they do it? With a stifling, relentless defense. In other words, the Giants overcame tough times, by thinking defense.

Likewise, investors should do the same: in today's tough times, think defense. The subprime mortgage and related asset default threat looks just as menacing as the Patriots' offense, if not more so. But, like the Giants, investors can overcome these formidable economic odds, buy thinking defense.

Defense wins on Wall Street

Here are 5 defensive plays worth a consideration:

Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), Sell / Stop Loss: $47.
-A diversified consumer products giant, extraordinaire (pun intended).

Cola-Cola (NYSE: KO). Sell / Stop Loss: $43.
-Because no one ever went broke, holding Coke.

AT&T (NYSE: T). Sell / Stop Loss: $27.
-Ma Bell is almost as big and as strong as she was before her forced break-up by the U.S. Government decades ago.

Tupperware (NYSE: TUP). Sell / Stop Loss: $22.
-A wonderful defensive play, given that millions more Americans will be eating at home and saving more leftovers, rather than dining out, in the decade ahead.

Woodward Governor (Nasdaq: WGOV).
Here, they offer a bearish market overview along with a bullish look at beverage stocks -- along with an options play on PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP).

The advisors explain, "Rallies can't gain footholds, while declines are deeper and more long-lasting than seem possible. As a result, there is an oversold condition in this market -- one which can spur sharp, but short-lived rallies at any time -- but a true intermediate-term buy signal is not at hand, for none of our indicators have turned bullish.

"The Standard & Poor's 500 turned bearish when the index fell through what had been support at 1490. That was the last piece of the bearish puzzle. The market has been under extreme pressure ever since. Any rallies towards 1490 can be sold, as that level now represents resistance.

"Meanwhile, where is support? It was at 1430-1440, but that level gave way and it seems likely now that the averages will test 1410 (the August closing lows) and perhaps 1370 -- which is multiple support from both August and March.

"Should that give way, then a true bear market would be underway. Support levels are somewhat meaningless in a nasty decline like this anyway; it is more important to monitor oversold conditions.

"The equity-only put-call ratios remain strongly on sell signals as they continue to climb on their charts. They are not 'oversold' yet, in our opinion. However, some of the minor index ratios are beginning to get oversold, as evidenced by the S&P 500 futures weighted put-call ratio which is very high on its chart and may be rolling over to a buy signal.

"Market breadth has been abysmal. Advances have only outnumbered declines one day in the last eleven trading days! Breadth has reached extremely oversold levels, not seen since the August bottom.

"However, the market needs to see, at least, back-to-back days of advances leading declines before one could say that breadth was turning truly positive. That hasn't happened in some time.

"So, none of our major indicators are bullish. In reality, only breadth is deeply oversold. The others have room to run before they reach oversold levels. However, that doesn't mean that this market can't occasionally be traded from the long side, when it gets very oversold.

"Just remember that 'oversold' does not mean 'buy.' Short-lived rallies arise out of oversold conditions, but true intermediate-term buy signals only arise when our technical indicators give multiple, confirmed buy signals.

"It might seem strange to recommend a long position in the midst of a horrendous market decline, but Coca Cola (NYSE: KO) and PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) have been moving up.
Pepsi Bottling Group (NYSE: PBG) is engaged in the manufacture, sale and distribution of Pepsi-Cola beverages. The firm operates about 300 manufacturing and distribution facilities and delivers Pepsi-Cola, Aquafina water, Lipton's Iced Tea, Mountain Dew, Tropicana juice, Starbucks Frappuccino and Slice to stores and third-party distributors. PBG operates in North America and Europe, accounting for more than half of the Pepsi-Cola beverages sold in North America and about 40% of the worldwide volume. Coca-Cola Enterprises (NYSE: CCE) is a major competitor.

There was good news for PBG investors last week, when Goldman Sachs raised its rating on the beverage group to "attractive." The analyst noted the potential for improved performance, as costs for most of the commodities used to make and bottle beverages stabilize.

PBG shares popped into a bullish "flag" consolidation pattern on the news. Prices frequently exit flags moving in the same direction they were traveling when they entered them. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Brokers recommend the shares with four "strong buys", one "buy", nine "holds" and one "sell". The PBG P/E ratio (16.60), PEG ratio (1.70), Price to Sales ratio (0.64), Price to Book ratio (3.76), Price to Cash Flow ratio (7.01), Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (30.50), EPS Growth rate (14.75%) and Return on Equity (24.91%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutions own about 61% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 500 Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $30.13 and $37.35. A stop-loss of $32.25 looks good here. Note that the firm is next expected to announce quarterly results in the first week of October.

Here's a hint. It is not PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP). It is, in fact, a 1999 PepsiCo spin-off headquartered in Somers, New York.

Pepsi Bottling Group (NYSE: PBG) is engaged in the manufacture, sale and distribution of Pepsi-Cola beverages. The firm operates about 300 manufacturing and distribution facilities and delivers Pepsi-Cola, Dr Pepper, Aquafina water, Lipton's Iced Tea, Mountain Dew, Tropicana juice, Starbucks Frappuccino and Slice to stores and third-party distributors. PBG operates in North America and Europe, accounting for more than half of the Pepsi-Cola beverages sold in North America and about 40 percent of the worldwide volume. Coca-Cola Enterprises (NYSE: CCE) is a major competitor.

The company pleased investors earlier in the week, when it reported Q2 EPS of $0.70 and revenues of $3.36 billion. Analysts had been expecting $0.63 and $3.29 billion. Management also guided FY07 EPS to $2.02-$2.07, versus Street consensus of $1.98. PBG shares popped into the initial stage of a bullish "pennant" consolidation pattern on the news. Prices frequently exit pennants moving in the same direction they were traveling when they entered them. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Brokers recommend the shares with three "strong buys," one "buy," ten "holds" and one "sell." The PBG P/E ratio (16.08), Price to Sales ratio (0.62), Price to Book ratio (3.64), Price to Cash Flow ratio (6.81), Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (29.56) and Return on Equity (24.91%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutions own about 58% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 500 Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $30.13 and $36.47. A stop-loss of $31.35 looks good here.

The milk, sold under the Kroger Active Lifestyle brand is considered the first national launch of cholesterol-cutting milk.

"There's a major trend toward health and wellness in the country," Linda Severin, Kroger's vice president for corporate brands told the USA Today. "Managing cholesterol is just a key need for many of our customers. This is a way we can help our customers be proactive with their heart health." The trend has shown lower-fat and fat-free milk sales to increase, while whole-milk sales have been on a decline, according to U.S. agriculture statistics.

The milk uses an ingredient with plant sterols, found naturally in some vegetables, fruits, nuts and other foods, and is recognized by the FDA as potentially helping reduce the risk of heart disease.

Ray Crocket of Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) told USA Today its Minute Maid Heart Wise brand has been strong since the cholesterol-cutting O.J. was put on the shelves in 2003. San Antonio-based Promised Land Dairy started its Y.U.M. or "Your Ultimate Milk" brand last fall in Texas. "The customers really have been appreciative once they understand it," executive vice-president Georgon Kuenemann told the newspaper.

The real questions haven't been answered yet. How does this affect your digestive system? Will there be a warning label on these products like Olean? Will the idea of cutting your cholesterol with Kroger's new milk make you want to dunk another Oreo cookie?

Shares of Kroger Co closed up 63 cents, to $28.76.

Kevin Shult is a writer for TheFlyOnTheWall.com (subscription required).

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Coke swallows Vitaminwater

Filed under: Deals, Competitive strategy, Coca-Cola (KO), Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A), Hansen Natural (HANS), Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE)

In another indication that healthier premium beverages are supplanting soft drinks, Coca Cola (NYSE: KO) has agreed to pay Glaceau, the maker of Vitaminwater, for $4.2 billion in cash and stock.

While it's not exactly a cheap purchase, I think it makes a lot of sense for Coke. Vitaminwater has had huge growth of late, and that looks likely to continue. With sales of soft drinks flat or even declining, it needs something to drive revenue growth.

This should also be seen as good news for Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A), a major Coke shareholder. Chairman Warren Buffett is regularly seen drinking Cherry Coke, especially at annual meetings but, as he gets older and investors worry about who will succeed him, a switch to a more healthful, vitamin-filled, lower-calorie beverage could extend his tenure at the helm of Berkshire.

Shares of Coke were up on news of the deal, and the price tag could be used to assign a value to other next-generation beverage companies. It makes Hansen Natural (NASDAQ: HANS) look interesting, with its market cap of around $3.6 billion.

In titling this post, I was going to go with the inevitable pun of "Zero being The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO) Hero" but, unfortunately, The Wall Street Journal beat me to the punch. As consumers move away from soda and toward more healthful premium beverages (such as Vitamin Water, my personal favorite), Coke has had surprising success with Coke Zero, a zero-calorie version of Coke which apparently tastes less like poison than regular Diet Coke. According to Coca Cola Chairman and CEO E. Neville Isdell, the initial success of Zero makes it Coke's most successful new product launch in 20 years.

As a young consumer, I believe that Coke Zero's success is largely a function of slick marketing campaign. They've actually managed to make diet soda cool. The slick ad campaign, which included slick, GQ-esque ads, in addition to funny ads that invited readers to sign up for a class-action lawsuit suing Coke Zero for tasting too much like regular Coke.

As beverages from companies like Jones Soda gain in popularity and cache, the traditional soft drink companies will need to revitalize their images. Coke has done just that with Coke Zero and they will probably continue to experience success.
